1872 France Census
Počet záznamov 16 477 400
This collection contains the 1872 census records from 67 departments of Metropolitan France. The 1872 census was conducted between 15 April 1872 and 15 May 1872. The indexed census records include given names, surnames, ages, birth places, and residence information. Additional details found on each record’s associated image include occupation, family relationship, and nationality.

From 1836 until 1936 a national census was conducted every five years in France except for 1871 and 1916. The 1871 census was delayed a year until 1872 due to the collapse of the Second French Empire during the Franco-Prussian War (also known as the War of 1870 in France). Census records provide an excellent resource for finding ancestral family members living together and identifying their relationships, ages, inferred birth years, and birth places.

The list below shows the departments included in this collection with their INSEE Official Geographical Code and name:

1 Ain

2 Aisne

3 Allier

4 Alpes-de-Haute-Provence

5 Hautes-Alpes

6 Alpes-Martimes

7 Ardèche

10 Aube

11 Aude

13 Bouches-de-Rhône

14 Calvados

15 Cantal

16 Charente

18 Cher

19 Corrèze

20 Corse

21 Côte-d'Or

22 Côtes-d'Armor

23 Creuse

24 Dordogne

26 Drôme

28 Eure-et-Loir

29 Finistère

31 Haute-Garonne

32 Gers

34 Hérault

36 Indre

37 Indre-et-Loire

38 Isère

41 Loir-et-Cher

42 Loire

43 Haute-Loire

44 Loire-Atlantique

46 Lot

47 Lot-et-Garonne

51 Marne

52 Haute-Marne

53 Mayenne

54 Meurthe-et-Moselle

55 Meuse

58 Nièvre

60 Oise

61 Orne

62 Pas-de-Calais

65 Hautes-Pyrénées

66 Pyrénées-Orientales

69 Rhône

70 Haute-Saône

71 Saône-et-Loire

72 Sarthe

73 Savoie

74 Haute-Savoie

77 Seine-et-Marne

78 Yvelines

79 Deux-Sèvres

80 Somme

82 Tarn-et-Garonne

83 Var

84 Vaucluse

85 Vendée

86 Vienne

89 Yonne

90 Territoire de Belfort

91 Essone

94 Val-de-Marne

95 Val d'Oise

For the departments covered, some gaps may exist due to the unavailability of the original documents.
